Respect for Parents in Islam
In Islam, showing adab (respect and good manners) to parents is essential. The Quran highlights this, stating, “Your Lord has decreed…good treatment to parents. If one or both reach old age with you, say not to them [even] ‘uff,’ and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word” (Quran 17:23). This means treating parents with kindness, patience, and gentleness, especially as they age.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that pleasing one’s parents brings Allah’s pleasure: “The pleasure of the Lord is in the pleasure of the parent” (Tirmidhi). In Islam, showing respect, gratitude, and compassion to parents is not just a virtue but a path to divine reward and blessings.
